Canada’s largest ethanol producer, Greenfield Global, is responding to the government’s call to action to provide products and services that support Canada’s response to COVID-19, thanks to manufacturing process improvements supported by a $90,000 FedDev Ontario investment through the Rural Innovation Initiative Eastern Ontario (RIIEO), in partnership with Grenville Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC). Produced at the company’s Johnstown plant, ethanol is typically used as a renewable additive to gasoline, reducing tailpipe emissions and increasing engine performance through higher octane levels. Through the RIIEO-supported process innovation project, Greenfield installed new equipment that enabled the company to differentiate 200-proof ethanol from their standard fuel ethanol. Greenfield is now producing hand sanitizer-grade alcohol for cross-country distribution from its Johnstown plant, which is the first Canadian facility to receive approval from Health Canada to produce Technical Grade alcohol.
