Strong rural communities are essential to Canada’s economic and social wellbeing. To help ensure federal policies and programs reflect rural realities, the Government of Canada has launched a public consultation to inform the development of a new Rural Development Action Plan.
Announced on December 15, the consultation invites input from rural residents, businesses, community organizations, and partners across the country. Feedback gathered through this process will help shape how future federal initiatives are designed and delivered in rural communities.
The consultation focuses on:
- Identifying priorities and challenges facing rural communities
- Improving how federal programs support rural economic development
- Strengthening engagement with rural stakeholders
The consultation is open from December 15, 2025, to February 6, 2026.

Community-based economic development organizations play an important role in supporting rural entrepreneurs, small businesses, and local economies. Input from those with on-the-ground experience helps ensure programs continue to respond to community needs and evolving regional priorities.
CFEO encourages rural stakeholders to review the consultation and consider sharing their perspectives. Participation helps inform future approaches to rural development and contributes to a stronger understanding of rural community needs.
Thank you for your continued engagement and commitment to rural economic development.
